Germany become hockey world champions for second time in a row

AMSTERDAM (Agencies): Germany successfully defended their World Cup hockey crown, edging Spain 1-0 in a tense final to become only the second nation after Pakistan to win the prestigious title four times. Michel Struthhoff emerged as Germany’s hero, scoring the decisive goal in the 44th minute as the Germans produced another disciplined defensive performance to keep Spain at bay and lift the coveted trophy. Germany’s triumph placed them alongside Pakistan in an exclusive group of four-time World Cup champions. Pakistan remain the first nation to achieve the feat, having won the World Cup in 1971, 1978, 1983 and 1994. The victory also made Germany only the second country to successfully retain the World Cup title, underlining their dominance at the highest level of international hockey. Spain earned four penalty corners during the final, compared with just one for Germany, but the statistics ultimately counted for little. Germany made their limited opportunities count when Struthhoff found a way through the Spanish defence in the 44th minute and fired home a field goal to put his side ahead. The goal proved decisive. With the clock ticking down, Spain threw everything forward in search of an equaliser.
