LAHORE: A stunning display of golf by Ahmed Baig gave Pakistan its first international victory on the international golf circuit in over 25 years! Pakistan’s Ahmad stormed to his first international win on the Asian Development Tour on Friday, carding a 65 and finishing -7 overall to claim victory in the Lexus Invitational at The Bluffs Grand Ho Tram in Vietnam. He started the day three flights and three shots behind the leaders, reeled off a sizzling string of five birdies to stamp his authority on the round, making the turn in 30. Two more birdies followed and despite a bogey on the last hole, he had done enough to wait in the clubhouse and watch his challengers fade away. “It was a great day for me,” he said after his round. “Mostly short putts. I started on the fourth hole, long putt for birdie, and then it was birdie, birdie, birdie… Just magical.” This is Ahmed’s third consecutive win in a row starting with the Rumanza Open in Multan and the JA Zaman Memorial in Lahore. Despite the wind, which has been a constant factor on all three days of this $85,000 ADT tournament, Ahmed was able to overcome the weather which caused the overnight leaders to struggle. “This is a huge step for Ahmed in terms of his personal career and a monumental moment for Pakistan golf overall,” says Aahyan Mumtaz –– organizer of the JA Zaman Memorial ––– a tournament that Ahmed won in emphatic fashion a fortnight ago. “This victory hopefully paves way for others to follow and is a step forward in bringing international golfing interest to Pakistan.” There are talks on going for an international ADT tournament to be held in Pakistan next year and a victory by Ahmed on the first event this calendar certainly helps national causes.
